Chic Giveaway: Travel à la TASCHEN

Style is as much about what you eat, what you listen to and what you read, as what you wear. Every stylista worth her salt should have in her possession a collection of impossible-to-lift-with-one-hand coffee table books about fashion capitals (read: Paris, New York, London). Whether you escape there regularly or are simply an urbanite at heart, TASCHEN books are tops at virtually transporting you straight to the heart of your fave city. Anytime I feel that pang of wanderlust, I open up one of these books and there I am, sitting in the Café Flore, listening to Edith Piaf as I sip my café crème. On my New York kinda days, I'll make a mental map of the cool stores & restaurants I have to hit up next time I'm in town.  Somehow, as horribly homebound as I might be, a great book always makes me feel like I've had a little mini-break.

Coffee table books are one of the best kinds of luxuries but might not be something you often buy yourself.  Luckily, Chapters/Indigo just sent me 4 of my favourite TASCHEN books to give away to you! One winner will receive two of the ultimate city guides, Taschen's New York and Taschen's Paris.  The second winner will receive two super stylish photographic journeys: Paris: Portrait of a City and London: Portrait of a City.

Huge bisous to Chapters/Indigo for this amazing contest xx

Here's how to win:

Red Carpet Rockers

Supermodel Carolyn Murphy in a custom Calvin Klein Collection orange silk crepe strapless dress. Image source: Wire Image

A long night, a few too many glasses of pinot and now I'm feeling the Oscar after-effects.  I liken the Academy Awards to the Superbowl, except somehow, nobody thought to make me snacks.  Anyone else experience this overt injustice? In a few short words, I was generally impressed by this year's red carpet turnout. Most starlets were smart enough to take the advice of their stylists so I found way more 'hits' than 'misses' this year. Boring. Can somebody bring back Bjork, please?

Since the web is so inundated with red carpet pics today, I'll save the redundancy and leave you to your own Google-y devices. Instead, thought I'd post a few pics of stars rocking Calvin Klein Collection at last night's Vanity Fair after-party. I know I just mentioned her last week but, how gorgeous is Carolyn Murphy?

Best:

Charlize Theron - I loved her close-cropped hair, her dewy makeup, her stark white Dior peplum confection and her general statuesque amazingness

Jessica Chastain - Unlike her ill-fitting turquoise number from the SAGs, her metallic Armani Prive gown and Jessica Lake waves screamed Old Hollywood glam. Such a fan.

Kerry Washington - I don't know if I've ever actually seen her in a movie but Kerry Washington always kills it on the carpet.  Props to Rachel Zoe for always making her look OTT amazing

Naomi Watts - Her sequined gunmetal  Giorgio Armani dress was out of this world.  Some people questioned the cut-outs but to me, they were edgy, cool and just perfect on her body.

Jennifer Lawrence - Elegant, age-appropriate and the perfect shade of pale pink, though I'm still torn about whether I liked/hated the skirt.  I know that I absolutely loved her after-party dress (see above) If I'm honest, I would probably put her on my best-dressed list no matter what she chose, just because I love her so

Jane Fonda - She owned that canary yellow Versace dress and showed up women half (even a third) her age. She is 75.  75!! #inspired

Worst:

Anne Hathaway - She picked her Prada 3 hours before the show, dismissing the custom-made Valentino couture gown the fashion house took such great pains to create for her, and thus became the unfortunate recipient of bad fashion karma. All I can say is 'Les Nipperables'. Awkward.

Helen Hunt - $700,000 worth of jewels were cheapened by her wrinkled H&M dress. I'm all about the high-low mix and actually didn't mind the dress, but if you're going to go low, you need to invest in a steamer.

Kristen Stewart - Did the girl just roll out of bed? Did she forget to shower? Even with crutches, I feel no sympathy. Geez, that sounded harsh. What is it about the red carpet that brings out my inner Regina George?

Whose looks did you love/loathe? I want to hear. Did I miss anyone? x

ps - Yay for Argo! Ben Affleck has really come full circle, non? I am so happy for him!

It's Official: Zara Canada Online

How do you make a Friday go from good to great?  How 'bout news of Zara's online shop, finally (finally!) coming to Canada.  If you live in Toronto, this might be exciting enough.  But imagine living in a world where there is literally no real shopping nearby, where a trip to Zara is a 2.5 hour (each way, on a good day) endeavour.  Add to that two toddlers in tow who, bless their hearts, just don't have the patience for scouring the racks, waiting in changeroom line-ups and don't understand the meaning of the words 'fierce', 'beyond' or 'must-have.'  Then imagine getting home and realizing something doesn't fit, which entails yet another full-day excursion back to Yorkdale just to arrange the exchange. It's exhausting. (Insert something about #firstworldproblems here)

But no longer.  I reported the rumour last week but what was once a pipedream is now official:  Zara is coming online to Canada March 6th.  Yay, yay, yay. I could not be a happier girl today :) And if you do have little ones, you must check out the Zara Kids Spring '13 Lookbook on rlr mini today.  Now that's what I call hope for our future...

Happy weekend, peeps!

A New York Minute with Smart Set

Big yellow taxis in the heart of NYC

It isn't often that you get offered a flight to New York for the day, and in my case, 'not often' means never. And so, when Smart Set asked me and Johanna (aka rlr mini) to fly to NY to check out their Summer '13 campaign shoot, we immediately replied, 'Mais, oui!'.  Here's a little recap of our super fun New York minute on set with Smart Set:

5:20 am - Alarm bell rings.  Johanna and I get everything 'did', then rush out the door into the -20 chill.

6:01 am - Parked at YYZ, through the gate, and we wait.

8:29 am - Flight supposed to leave but something is amiss.  Our suspicions are confirmed when the pilot announces that the plane's 'computer' is 'broken'.  I'm not an engineer but methinks this sounds unsafe.

10:04 am - Pilot finally announces that unfortunately we will have to find a new flight.  Seriously?! Does he know that we were supposed to be in NY at 11? Luckily a fellow Toronto blogger, also en route to NYC, has this travel thing all figured out.   She calls us, already on board another plane mind you, and chirpily instructs us to bust it to the new gate for the 10:15 flight. We sneak our way past a crowd of fellow frustrees and manage to flirt our way onto the plane. Phew. #sistapower

11:59 am - In New York!! Eek. A black Lincoln picks us up and whisks us off to the heart of Chelsea. We head into ROOT Drive-In Studios where the shoot is already in full swing.  Models, photographers and about 30 other 'crew' scurry about the busy set. Catered lunch is laid out while boys in distressed jeans and girls in black leggings dig into the Perrier and crudités.

12:00am - 1:14 pm - We are ushered behind a black curtain where we get a sneak peek at the brand new collection, guided by Smart Set's gorgeous Eugenia.  She explains the brand's key trends, from preppy bright resort tunics (v. Tory Burch), to tailored blazers paired with matching cropped pants, to easy, breezy dresses. Johanna falls in love with a pair of printed pants.  I am smitten with the lightweight knits.  The re-branding efforts are obvious; everything looks decidedly fresh, modern and quite honestly, far more fashion-forward than I would have expected from Smart Set.

1:30  2:15 - We walk to local trattoria, La Bottega, for lunch (it's attached to the super cool Maritime Hotel.) Wood-fired pizzas, pastas and salads are served up by a woman who looks like Halle Berry.  We chat with the Smart Set team and the other bloggers who've been invited to the shoot - Élodie Laetitia Parthenay of Hello Elo, a Parisienne transplant who now lives in Montreal, and Casie Stewart, Toronto's digital darling and social media consultant.  Pretty pumped to be in their company.

2:22 - Back at the shoot, we snap loads of pics of the models in full-on campaign mode.  The girls dance to mad tunes in bright dresses and playful shorts and look perfectly ready for summer.  We discover how models actually achieve that windblown look - it involves fans AND treadmills.  And you thought being a model was easy...

3:00 - Jo and I are ready for our close-up, intimated but strangely turned on by the boom mike and video crew.  Eugenia asks us questions about our favourite pieces from the collection (love the neon rubber bracelets, tunics, summer dresses, printed pants), our favourite spring trends (graphic stripes), and how we plan on incorporating the Smart Set pieces into our wardrobes this summer; I can think of a million ways, and it's not just because I'm feeling swayed by the wining/dining ;)

4:00 pm - Black Lincoln has returned to whisk us back to the airport.  Traffic is surprisingly good so we get to LaGuardia in record time :(

5:30 pm - Take off time.  Jo and I realize we went to NYC without spending a single penny. Never, ever thought that was possible. We cry a little about not having time to shop (not even one store! sniff) but vow to make up for it next time. Oh yes, we will make up for it.

7:15 pm - Back in Toronto. I drop off Jo at her house, pick up my mom (who has so generously offered to watch the kidlets), drop her off in Kitchener, and drive back home to London in a semi-comatose state.

11:00 pm - Kiss my babies, back in bed.  Was it only just a dream?

We loved our NY minute and can't wait to shop the new collection once it hits stores. Thanks for the fun Smart Set.  Can't wait to do it all again (hint, hint ;)) x

Putting the Super in Super Bowl

Calvin Klein Underwear introduces Calvin Klein Concept for men © 2013 Steven Klein

Who said the Super Bowl was only for the XY set? Last year it was MDNA, this year the Beyonce concert and now, this new ad from Calvin Klein Underwear.  Oh, and apparently there's a football game going on?

Calvin Klein's first-ever ad during Super Bowl XLVII will debut the new Calvin Klein Underwear Spring 2013 global ad campaign featuring model Matthew Terry as the iconic archetype of 'man vs. machine', inspired by the underwear's 360º seamless technology.

Mr. Terry, a personal trainer from Pennsylvania (and winner of the 2011 VMAN/Ford Model Search) was captured by renowned photog Steven Klein for the print campaign. Taking cues from the new, seamless underwear line, both the video and print advertisements emphasize innovation, movement and perfection. Hear, hear for perfection!

The Calvin Klein Concept line is all about mobility, offering briefs, trunks and boxer briefs in breathable microfiber and cotton stretch. A limited offering of coordinating women's Calvin Klein Concept silhouettes is also available. The new Calvin Klein Concept underwear line will arrive in store at retailers around the world and throughout the global network of Calvin Klein Underwear stores the first week of February, just in time for Valentine's.
